David was apprenticed to a gilding craftsman in 1983; his apprenticeship was based on the traditional Venetian style of gilding. He went on to work for a selection of shops and workshops which afforded him experience in a wide range of styles and finishes for the antiques market.

In 1994 David started his own gilding business. In 1999 he re-located from London to his current studio based near the international port of Harwich, on the Essex-Suffolk border and within easy reach of  London.

David mostly works from his studio but he also undertakes long- and short-term on-site architectural or interior projects for decorators and designers.
